February 22, 2018 at 2:00pm EST Webinar featuring Dr. Donna Elam, President/CEO of ELI, Elam Leadership Institute: "Courageous Conversations: Building Culturally Competent Leadership"

Join AWE for a candid conversation with Dr. Donna Elam about making meaningful gains in diversity and inclusion within the workplace. Dr. Elam is President/CEO of ELI, Elam Leadership Institute, a national network of leadership development experts for educational institutions working with diverse populations to address achievement and connectedness of all stakeholders. Dr. Elam will provide a proven framework for launching discussions around workplace equity and diversity, because true progress goes far beyond adding a policy to an organization’s employee handbook. The discussion will offer a practical roadmap for organizational leaders to increase their cultural competency and affect real, meaningful change from within.

Here are a few key items you’ll learn from this webinar:

  • ELI’s framework for affecting change on the issues of diversity and inclusion
  • Definitions of key terms across diversity discussions
  • The ELI-5 set of principles to guide leaders from policy to practice
  • Qualities and actions that make a leader culturally competent
  • Steps leaders can take to increase their own comfort and skillset in this area
  • The impact these issues have on the events industry, specifically
  • How AWE and other types of empowerment organizations can be part of the solution

Dr. Donna Elam is a nationally recognized authority in diversity and cultural competence research and training for educational, business, governmental and community agencies. In addition to being President/CEO of ELI, Elam Leadership Institute, she has received the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director’s Award for her work as a member of the Attorney General’s Hate Crime’s Working Committee; has been recognized by the United States Department of Education for her work in Youth Development and Student Achievement; and is a recipient of the Florida Education Fund/Florida College Access Network’s Lifelong Service Award. Dr. Elam sits on the executive boards of Magnet Schools of America, the U.S. Attorney’s Office Civil Rights Work Group, and the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Institute for Non-violence.

While we will primarily focus on how leaders can affect change and make their workplaces more diverse, equitable and inclusive, the conversation will be equally valuable to junior-level individuals looking to take the lead on these issues within their own organizations. Creating a more diverse and inclusive environment inside the events industry is a core tenant of AWE’s mission and a focus for our 2018 education and events series. Dr. Elam’s webinar will serve as a catalyst for enriching these discussions across the events industry!
