HISTORY & MISSION

AWE was founded in 2015 by Carrie Abernathy, CMP, CEM, CSEP, Tamela Blalock, MBA, CAE, CMP, DES, Mas Tadesse, Mary Higham, CEM and Kiki J. Fox. In 2015, these women discovered that they had something in common: they wanted to bring women together and advocate for their careers. Each of them were already accomplishing this in separate ways, some via a ladies business brunch on the weekends and some via personal mentorship with other female colleagues. Since the AWE co-founders believe that we’re all better together, The Association for Women in Events, a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, was born.

Milestones

2015

April 2015—AWE launched as the first-ever organization of its kind
July 2015—A new board of 25 leaders was tasked to develop and guide the execution of AWE’s mission

 

2016

January 2016—AWE opened membership and hosted a launch event in Washington, D.C.
September 2016—AWE earned Collaboration Artist Award from BizBash
October 2016—AWE announced official partnership with IMEX

 

2017

February 2017—AWE welcomed first international board member
February 2017—AWE announced Freeman as Platinum Partner
March 2017—Founding President, Carrie Abernathy, CMP, CEM, CSEP earned Smart Woman of the Year from Smart Meetings Magazine
March 2017—AWE launched the Women in Events Hall of Fame, an awards program that recognizes women in the events industry for a lifetime

 

2018

January 2018—AWE earned PCMA Visionary Award for Excellence
May 2018 - AWE brought the #MeToo movement to the events industry spotlight by co-developing the Events Industry Sexual Harassment Task Force with other leading industry organizers.
